Every week, Oprah is setting an intention exclusively for Oprah Insiders, with reflections on topics like letting go, forgiveness, coming into your own, and more. Visit the page with this week’s video on Being Fully Present every day this week for a new dose of inspiration.

Tuesday, April 5

Tonight at 7:00 PM EST on Oprah Daily, Oprah will sit down with poet and teacher Mark Nepo to talk about staying fully present and explore themes from his work The Book of Awakening—including how being creative can help boost your authenticity and presence in the moment.

There are a number of things that have contributed to Nepo’s knowingness of how important it is to stay present in the moment, including his bout with cancer. When he was in his 30s, Nepo was diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma. During an episode of Super Soul Sunday, he shared with Oprah just how drastically this diagnosis changed his perception. Here is what he told her.

“This was going on 26 years ago. It seems like yesterday and a lifetime ago. I was in a former life and a former marriage—and I had this lump start to grow. It was huge. I had never been ill. I had a lot going on. I didn’t pay much attention to it until a friend said, ‘You better look at that.’ I went to a sport doc because I really didn’t think anything of it. He said, ‘I think you should see someone else.’ All of the sudden, as most people experience, I went through a door. When I went to go back out that door, it was gone. There was no way to get back to the life I had lived. Everything had changed.

It wasn’t the cancer, it’s what the cancer opened. Just as it is not the loss of a loved one or the loss of a job. Whatever opens us is never as important as what it opens. The field that it opened is what matters. It’s not to deify the cancer, it’s not a thing to be romanticized. That’s not to minimize the difficulty of the loss—it’s genuine and it’s something everyone must go through. But what it opens is the next part of the journey.

No experience is wasted. I feel like we are asked to be committed to this unending dynamism of what it means to be human. One day I can be plodding along, like an ant with the grain of sand. And all the sudden it opens and there’s an expansiveness and a billowing of spirit. Over the years, I’ve stopped trying to get through the tasks and running to the next. Instead, I’ve started to understand that it’s the rhythm between the two that lets us experience heaven on earth.”

If you’re just focused on just the big moments—good or bad—in your life, you’ll totally miss discovering the new pathways that have opened up and the daily joys that always surround you. For more inspiration on how to stay fully present even when your world is changing all around you, come back to Oprah Daily tonight at 7:00 PM EST to hear Oprah chat further with Mark Nepo.
