Hello, Oprah Insiders!

preview for Intentions: Oprah & Gayle Talk Having Your Own Advisory Board

Oprah: Happy Sunday and congratulations on making it through another week. Gayle and I have been talking about the fact that when you are trying to do something important in your life, you want to surround yourself with people who have the best intentions. And, when you take advice from other people, you want to make sure you're clear that their intention isn't about what's best for them, but about what's best for you.

All the best corporations and even small businesses have what we call advisory boards. Gayle has been a great advisory board member for me. I actually have a kitchen cabinet of three or four people, depending on what the situation is—but Gayle is always in that number. They are people whose opinions, judgment, and trust I can rely on as being in my best interest with no agenda.

Gayle: I feel the same about you, Oprah. We just had something happen. I was trying to decide about a flight to take—red-eye or afternoon. She said, 'Why wouldn't you take the afternoon?' And I thought, 'Right, why wouldn't I take the afternoon?'

Oprah: What I've learned is knowing you have one whole day to yourself makes a difference. We are diverting. We're talking about your personal advisory board. Who are the people you can surround yourself with that you can absolutely have no doubt that they have your best interest at heart?

Gayle: It's the no agenda part. For me, it's definitely you, Favorite Daughter Kirby, and Favorite Son Will. I don't make any major decision without checking in with each of them. If all three of them feel one way and I feel differently...

Oprah: Then you will check yourself!

Gayle: Yes. It doesn't mean you have to take their advice, though 99.9% of the time I do—but it's just good to check and see what they are thinking.

Oprah: It's like the old adage: If three people are telling you that you're drunk, you probably should sit down. This week, I want you to think about the people you surround yourself with who you trust. And, if there are people who have been giving you advice who you cannot absolutely certify in your own spirit who have your best interest at heart, you need to check yourself. That's our intention this week—surrounding yourself with people who have your best interest at heart.

Gayle: With no judgment. They only want what's best for you.

Oprah: Yes, they only want what's best for you.

Gayle: Hopefully you have one or two.

Oprah: The truth is you don't need a lot. Have a great week everyone!
